BDO in Ukraine at the EURESFO24 Forum: climate change adaptation and energy efficiency

The BDO in Ukraine team took part in the 11th European Urban Resilience Forum (EURESFO), which took place on June 26-28, 2024 in Valencia.
The European Urban Resilience Forum 2024 was hosted by the city of Valencia, which has been awarded the status of European Green Capital for 2024. EURESFO has been a key European initiative since 2013, organized by ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainable Development and the European Environment Agency (EEA). The event provided a unique platform for sharing experiences in the field of sustainability, bringing together the city representatives, experts and stakeholders from local and regional institutions.

BDO in Ukraine representatives, Yuliia Boyarchuk, Iryna Knyzhnikova and Bohdan Galkin, actively participated in plenary sessions and thematic discussions, which allowed them to share Ukraine’s experience in sustainable development and attract new ideas for improving climate policy.

Participants from cities and regions across Europe gathered to discuss challenges and opportunities for building resilience in the context of sustainable urban development. During the three days of the forum, more than 20 sessions and interactive workshops were held, covering three main areas, and more than 100 speakers and moderators from European cities, including ICLEI representatives, spoke.
The following main topics were discussed:
  • Adaptation to climate change.
  • Energy efficiency.
  • Sustainable development.
  • Financing of green projects.
  • Restoration.

One of the main areas of discussion was the ICLEI Ukraine Roadmap. Representatives from 19 cities of Ukraine attended the forum to present their cases focused on resilience, sustainable development and recovery. This area was aimed at building resilience in an unstable environment and bridging the gap between the humanitarian response and recovery.

The forum also discussed issues of multi-level governance and cooperation, the blue economy, and the transition to a sustainable and climate-friendly strategy for cities and regions. All these aspects are essential components of the Roadmap for Ukrainian cities, as they build a long-term recovery strategy based on Local Green Deals.

“The EURESFO24 forum will be remembered for positive emotions and pleasant meetings with the Ukrainian representatives. It was very nice to meet a representative of the Pokrovsk community and learn about the state and plans of the community. This is one of the many locations I have visited this year while the war in Ukraine is ongoing. When traveling to remote frontline towns, it is nice to learn about the history of such places and enjoy the nature, and then meet a representative of one of these communities at the forum.”
- said Yulia Boyarchuk.

The participation of our team in the 11th European Urban Sustainability Forum (EURESFO) allowed us to not only share experiences and learn about the latest approaches to sustainable development, but also to establish new partnerships for further cooperation. We are confident that only by working together can we make significant progress towards a sustainable and climate-neutral future.
