BDO Ukraine Goes Green: Tree Planting in Kyiv and Dnipro
For our team, it was paramount to be part of this environmental-social event and contribute to the greening of areas. As part of the global BDO network, we are committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This liability was taken up by the BDO network a few years ago, aligning with the Net Zero Financial Service Providers Alliance. And more green space will reduce carbon dioxide emissions, thus mitigating climate change.
In Kyiv, young saplings are already taking root at two locations. Near our office close to the Borispilska metro station on Bazhana Avenue 10 Virginia bird cherry trees (4.5-5 m tall) were planted; and 10 white mulberries (1-1.5 m) and 10 linden trees (1.5-2 m) are taking roots at the premises of School No. 113.
In Dnipro's city center, in a park near our office, 10 Crimean pine saplings (1-1.1 m) and 10 Scandinavian rowan saplings (1.2-1.5 m) are already growing.
Another 20 young maple trees (1.5-1.8 m) and catalpa trees (1-1.5 m) will be planted by volunteers on either side of the road in Bilogorodka, where we have an alternative autonomous office since last year.
Trees were planted in Kyiv and Dnipro in cooperation with a public organization “Million Trees” and the administrations of ME MGS Darnytskyi District of Kyiv and ME “City Infrastructure” of Dnipro City Council.
“I am deeply grateful to the BDO in Ukraine team for finding ways to enhance the environment and support ecological initiatives, even in challenging times,” — said Lyudmila Dmytrivna Filinska, the director of ME MGS Darnytskyi District of Kyiv, during last week's event.
Relying on data from the UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe), a tree can absorb up to 150 kg of carbon dioxide annually. Based on this and by approximate calculation, trees planted by BDO in Ukraine in October 2023 will absorb roughly 63 kg of CO2 by October 2024. In 20 years, this absorption rate will reach up to 9,000 kg of CO2 annually. Our team will monitor the growth of these new “proteges”, conduct an annual audit of their condition (we even have certified auditors for this 😊), and track the amount of carbon dioxide they absorb and oxygen they release.
At BDO in Ukraine, we adhere to the principles of sustainable development, caring for the interests of future generations, especially their need for a safe and healthy environment.
