Becoming Auditor in New Tech Era: Key Takeaways from Webinar

Speakers from BDO in Ukraine held an online lecture “Auditor’s Profession in Today’s World”, organized by the European Business Association and the Optima Education Centre Distance School as part of the career counseling project.

Today, high school students are actively considering their future profession. It is important to choose a business that will not only bring pleasure but also open up new prospects in the world of modern technology. The webinar was aimed at supporting the teenagers choose a profession by introducing them to the auditor’s basic work, that combines modern technology and opportunities for personal development. In addition, the participants had the opportunity to learn more about the prospects for professional growth at BDO in Ukraine, where innovation and professionalism contribute to success at every stage of the career path.

Two experts from BDO in Ukraine joined the webinar:
  • Sergei Balchenko, Managing Partner at BDO in Ukraine, with 33 years of experience in the audit industry
  • Oleksii Kuznietsov, internship supervisor at BDO in Ukraine, who shared opportunities for internships and career development at the company.

At the beginning of the webinar, Sergei Balchenko highlighted several important aspects of the auditing profession, comparing it with other areas of activity, in particular with the accounting profession. He noted that auditors should have not only technical knowledge and skills, but also the ability to quickly adapt to changes, as the profession is constantly evolving, especially in the context of the development of new technologies.

One of the key topics of his speech was the transformation of the auditing profession in the context of the introduction of artificial intelligence. Mr Balchenko said that the auditing profession is changing rapidly, and many investments are already being made in technology, including the development artificial intelligence. He mentioned about a robot named Emma, which is already working in BDO’s offices in Switzerland and the UAE. Emma is a robot that assists in advising on tax matters. 20 tax specialists trained her, and now she can give an answer in a few seconds, that takes 1-2 days compared to a human specialist. This is an example of how technology is radically changing approaches to work in the audit sector, and how artificial intelligence is becoming an integral part of the profession.

Sergei Oleksiiovych noted that the auditor’s profession is and will be in demand at any time and is respected all over the world.
 

“We work in various industries, with well-known companies, and have the opportunity to travel and work with large funds,” — he said. Balchenko’s own experience includes the opportunity to visit many different countries, including America, European countries; he also had the opportunity to study in Holland. “I have had a very interesting life working as the auditor!” — he concluded. Then he wished young people who are facing the decision to choose a profession: “Look for your profession persistently, and if you have chosen it, — follow this path confidently and inevitably, have your own independent opinion, seek the truth and be good people.”


Oleksii Kuznietsov shared the benefits of working for audit firms, using BDO in Ukraine as an example:
